Shelby Hood Grates
« on: August 19, 2015, 10:59:00 PM »
June 69 Dearborn. I would like to know how the hood grates are supposed to be fastened on the inside of the hood. Couldn't find a post for that item. Maybe they are called something different than a Grate or Grill??

Thank you!

Ones in back are bonded on (JB weld works). Ones in front screwed on. Use the same screws as tailpanel.

We just used 2 part (epoxy)  body panel epoxy in black. Wasn't easy to find it in black but was allot easier than painting it later and worrying about little nicks or chips

I have the 3M body panel adhesive. It is black and will be perfect for the back grates. I used that stuff to re-adhere the hood to the frame. Front are only screwed in, correct?

Yes fronts are screwed on. FYI the most prevalent screws are the same distinct type used to secure the top edge of the rear fiberglass tailpanel . AMK sells them for the tail panel.

Got the grates off!  What a job! I didn't thick of this but being that I technically have a 70 Shelby GT 350 with the black stripes on the hood, what color are the hood grates supposed to be??

The grates were unpainted steel. They were a very dark gray hard to tell from black.

Finally I know the truth about the colour of the Shelby hood grates. Actually I wasn't  looking for this detail at all, as I was under the impression that these hood grates were painted black.
So unpainted, very dark grey almost black like a charcoal colour. Would that be similar to phosphate look. They would eventually rust, wouldn't they?
And was this also the case for the grates in the front fenders and side scoops.
