Fender Bolt Head Types/Markings - mid 66 Metuchen NJ cars
« on: May 24, 2016, 02:34:22 PM »
I have suspicion that my upper fender bolts may not be correct, it is a survivor FB (in family for over 40 years) and was shown in the early days of the MCA and might have been messed with during that time frame. Looking to see what is on other mid 66 Metuchen NJ cars. My fastback was built in mid April 66.
Thanks

This is what is on it. Mostly interested in the bolt on the right.

Took a look at what I could find and must report that the vaast majority of the pictures I have were stored in a resolution where few show this detail. Can report that the fender bolts all were of the solid/smooth washer style while the inner bolts appear to be the star washer style.

I included the three where I could make out some head markings in the examples below

Hope they help in some way

Thank you Phill,

Do you have access to either of those to where you could tell the markings on the bolt heads? The styles appear to be the same.

AU SNK.  YES I DO
might take me a while to get organised on them though. also have a unrestored april 66 build car that I'm working on that has the same bolts so probably easier to take images from that one.

stay tuned I guess.

AU SNK: my inner general bolts are exactly as yours with the same logo. See the attached photo for the outer bolts. The inside of the bolt heads have something like R B W along the outside perimeter and what appears to be a line in between each letter. These are very faint.  They are on all bolts and all of the outer fender bolts are the same. October 1965 NJ

And here is another example from a MARCH NJ example.

Hey Phil,

Any chance of some close ups of your buck tags?
I am collating a spreadsheet and trying to see what pattens I can find in relation to the ROT and punch holes too. Hopefully one day I can post some undiscovered findings. Anyone else please feel free to PM them to me too. You can blank out the last two or 3 digits of the vin if you like but I would obviously prefer the whole number for accuracy's sake.
Thanks,

Dan.

My 2 cents the on fender bolts the star washers bolts (that scratchs off paint and grip better) are on the two ends of the front fenders to help aline them quickly on the line.
Of course line workers put what ever on, to send the car down the line.
Years ago a few judges wanted to see all matching bolt heads , I lost a point for having different style heads on my Concours 64

Sorry, did not see the M style bolt head, I think I would replace it with a nice old smooth washer one.
Would love to see the car on the show field one day,
In the old days sadly, unrestored car had points deducted for missing or torn engine compartment decal and owners put repo decals on to not lost points.
Things are better in unrestored judging, these days but training new judges is critical.

JAKE.

it has been my observation on NJ cars that both top fender bolts closest to the plenum has a extra dome style washer as per my image supplied in reply 3.

Not saying this way is set in stone just something I have seen when fiddling around with NJ.  have exmples of January, March and April build dates where this was done and don't get me started on Dearborn examples.

See yah soon buddy.  hooters here we come.
