Radiator fan blade - 66 A code with AC
« on: April 18, 2017, 10:40:38 PM »
Hello all,
I need to know what the correct radiator fan is for my vehicle...
Genuine GT A code 289 with Air conditioning and power steering. 20/5/66
Also is it meant to have a clutch mounted to the fan because it has a/c ????
Your response will be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards,

Richard.

One reference I have says a 7 blade, 17.5", C40Z-8600-C and a casting number of C60E-C.  I don't believe these had clutches.

Factory AC would have come with a clutch fan.

Typically maybe but not in all years and all Mustang applications.

Yes it was sold with air factory ordered, not dealer fitted. So does anyone know for sure what fan blade and if it has a clutch?

That is good because without that context someone might take it it that all years were like that (A/C = clutch fan).

So is every one of the same opinion that this would be the correct part number applicable to my vehicle ? even though midlife thinks it doesn't have a clutch? ..... you can see my confusion.
Thanks again in advance,
Richard.

I checked the MPC ahd the C6OE-G appears to be the correct fan for your 66 with hanging AC.

The first source I cited usually is correct, but doesn't necessarily contain all available options...sorry if I misled you.

Don't have a number from the original I posted so can't confirm nor say that its wrong but if it were me I would find an original and use that as a source over a MPC

I dug up an old thread in this forum on this with some good info:

http://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=4203.0

When I had to figure this out for our car to get it correct, I found the MustangTek site and Bob Manell's book as sources. What I found was that for '65 and '66 cars, there were two critical factors determining which 7-blade fan your car had:

Before 1/5/66, w/factory air:  C6OE-C
Before 1/5/66, w/factory air & thermactor emissions: C6OE-A
After 1/5/66, w/factory air, w or w/o thermactor, C6OE-G

All of these 7-blade config's got fan clutches because of the A/C extra load on the engine. Thermactor a bit more (but negligible in some reading that I've done on this).
All should have also had a fan shroud and I believe a hot idle compensator spliced into the pcv hose to the carb spacer.

Hope this helps out somewhat.
