67 289 San Jose Breather Caps

Since I was searching through my pictures to respond to another thread thought I would upload and post the results of a survey across the production year at San Jose. These are from both AC and non-AC engines. Air conditioning appears to not play a part on which style was used. Only found one single straight nipple breather in all of my pictures from 67 at San Jose so far with the painted (no engine dress up kit) black breathers

Hope this helps other in the future that need the help and information

Hello Jeff,

In attachment the breather cap that I took of my car.
If I understand you correctly, it should be black in stead off engine blue paint?
The color is the exact blue color of the aircleaner and valve covers.
Would this mean it has been replaced, or a different year model?
my car is a 289 C-code engine with thermactor, no AC and closed emission system - DSO71 ordered
Since I am restoring those parts, I gladly would know in which color it must be.

Block Letter FoMoCo is correct for your build info, BLACK (semi-gloss black) would be the correct color. The filler pipe that the cap inserts over would be natural steel so leave that un-painted.

So an Autolite straight nipple black cap would be what?
I just found one and wondered if this would match up with a late 67.

+1  Someone just took the easy route and repainted yours at some point in the past. Possibly when the engine was rebuilt or repaired.  Maybe just an attempt to pretty things up a bit

Back to your question.  For it to require the nipple it would have been designed for a closed emission car or cars going to specific states such as California or NY.

One application would be for 1968-69 six cylinder.  Possibly 70-71 also. 

If purchased over the counter it might have been used as a service replacement for a 65-66 289 and six cylinder Mustang application for cars with closed emissions

For example the closed emission thermactor 289 application is one style cap with a nipple and another is a non thermactor open emission type that does not have a nipple. One cap in my example has a slip on type bottom side and the other can have a neck that slips into the tube of the valve cover or the open cavity with clips that slips over the neck on the valve cover.
