67 Starter Markings
« on: January 16, 2019, 03:29:55 PM »
Hi,
Did a search, but couldn't find exactly.

Looking for the correct ink stamped marking 67 starter (for my car).

I thought the following:
Autolite  C7 AF 11001 B would be the correct one.

But than I was told the C7 number is for the later years 68+.
C2OZ 11002-B would be correct for 66 + 67

Hm, C2 represents 62.....
Confused.

Ralf : You are correct. Obviously, someone is confusing "stamping numbers" with Part Numbers. I have attached a copy of pages from the 1967 "only" Parts and Accessories Catalog (single year MPC if you will), printed in January of 1967, and a page from the 1960-68 MPC printed in 1968, showing "Starter Applications". As you can see, both show the C7AF-11001-B stamping number, and the C20Z-11002-A Part Number. Also note that the same Part Number could also have a stamping of C40F-11001-A.

Hope this helps straighten things out.

Obviously, someone is confusing "stamping numbers" with Part Numbers. - - As you can see, both show the C7AF-11001-B stamping number, and the C20Z-11002-A Part Number. Also note that the same Part Number could also have a stamping of C40F-11001-A.
Just for clarification purposes, the part numbers used for starters on 67 289 Mustangs would be either C4OF-11001-A or C7AF-11001-B. These would be ink stamped on the starter. C2OZ-11002-A is a stock number for service use. It refers to acceptable replacement part numbers only, and is NOT marked on the part (except maybe by a tag) but on the box. If you followed the "paper trail" of C2OZ 11002-A back to its source, it would say use C4OF-11001-A or C7AF-11001-B starter, but not how to build them. Following part number C4OF-11001-A or C7AF-11001-B back further, both of those documents would list all the component parts use to make the starter. Following a part number of a component part listed on C4OF-11001-A or C7AF-11001-B would get you to its manufacturer, like the housing, the field wiring, bearings etc. If it sounds confusing don't worry. If you get a starter ink stamped marked C4OF-11001-A or C7AF-11001-B, you're all set.

Jim : I think that in your last Post you need to revise "alternators" to "starters" in order to really avoid confusion.

Great thx.

So I understood for my starter:
Ink stamped # C4OF-11001-A or C7AF-11001-B is correct (2 bolt)

Is there any number in front of the starter casted (above the "nose")? If yes, which one (related to my car)?

I was looking for this one, but not correct for my car than:

If someone knows a source where to find such a (remanufactured) starter  I need....great  to send pn.

Done. Thanks. I have a 67 alternator sitting on my desk and had "alternator" on the brain. Besides, the only difference is one makes electricity, the other uses it.

Yes. It "may" be C2AF-11131-A. Of the three spare starters I have, two noses are marked D2AF-11131-CA and one is blank. Keep in mind that there is one nose piece for manual transmission use, one for automatic transmissions that started in 67-68 time period.

Ralf : I knew I remembered a previous Post on this subject, it just took a while to find it. http://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=11000.msg114980#msg114980

Also, if you haven't looked already, check out the Library under 1967 Articles, Decoding Date Codes, pages 18 and 19.

ALSO look here: http://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=16111.msg100870#msg100870

I posted shots of my RESTORED starter. Please note that there is a transition period between the older FoMoCo stamp to the AUTOLITE stamp that occurred early on in the 67 model year so the AUTOLITE choice I made was based upon a "best guess" of the actual change-over date (at San Jose plant).

Thx.

So, if I look to an original starter, in most cases the ink stamp has long gone.
What is the correct casted number above the nose to identify original starter related to my car?
