64 1/2 - 73 289/302/351 Timing Covers

While discussing the 67 289K timing cover with Bob Gaines, it became known to me that there were two covers for that year. I have 4 or 5 65-68 covers of different styles so I'll start with the 67 289 since that's what started all of this.

Jeff suggested this thread to handle the covers for 64.5-73, so add your data here.

Early 67 Timing Cover (mostly used in 66)


Here is an early 67 timing cover closeup. Its clock date indicates this is a April 66 cover as used on 1966 models and into the early part of 1967. Others can discuss its use on 1966 models.
For search look-ups the tags are:
C5OE-6059-A1 with a number 2 under the C5OE
Maker is Sheffield and there is a FoMoCo in an Oval.


Same cover front view. Note the triangular raised gasket area on the fuel pump side and compare that to others.


Here is the 7 rib top of the cover. The easiest identifier!

Later 67 Timing Cover (the rest of 67)


Here is a closeup of the "later" 67 timing cover -- used for most of the year. Its clock date indicates this is a November (I think) 66 cover as possibly used on most 1967 models. I say possibly as I don't have enough covers to verify.
For search look-ups the tags are:
C5OE-6059-A1. There is an 8 next to the FoMoCo oval.
Maker is Sheffield and there is a FoMoCo in an Oval.

This cover has no ribs.

On my Shelby K motor I believe the cover was replaced because it had the 7 ribs, which on a January engine build would be too late for this cover.

And then I found yet another cover.

According to many the date circle has 12 slashes for the 12 months with a dot on each slash to denote the month cast.  Since there is no start date (no separate slash for January) there will be 6 dots, each on its own slash, to denote month 6,  for example.

Oddly enough I just found a cover with a 67 clock date and a VERY LIGHT dot over one of the slashes (zoom in) that matches my engine build date of early January. Makes me wonder how just in time these covers would be to an engine build date.

Use the late 66 cover or a January cover?

Interestingly this is the third cover I've found with what appears to be a hand written number behind where the water pump would go. Engine rotation number? This pic and a previous post show a 1 and 11 number.

Here are some details of a fairly early timing cover.
1st pic is an overall look. Has a built-in timing pointer and uses a water pump without a back plate. When the pump bearing goes out the timing cover is at risk, like this one.

2nd pic is of C4AE-6059-B cast number and a date clock. Date is 6/64 (maybe).
Your guess?

3rd pic shows the dipstick hold-down.

4th is of the instep into the cover for the pump.

5th is of the rib style. Look at a later cover to see the strengthening beam put in between the bolt holes at top and the curve of the cover.

Next up a much later cover. If you have an interesting cover, post it!

My signature car is the non-ribbed version. Next to the FoMoCo oval is a 7 not 8.  Looks like Oct 66 date.

Also note that the engine was assembled in December (M) as a revision level 15, in Windsor.

I would imagine that the engine assembly location and build date and perhaps revision play a role in what cover was installed.  The vehicle actual build date would be secondary, and the vehicle assembly plant would most likely not influence it at all.

And since I just love to include part numbers, which helps in searches, both internal and external such as Google et al, the basic part number is 6019, "Cover Assembly - Cylinder Timing Gear Front".

I see four versions serviced:

C4AZ-6019-A 1962-1965
C4AZ-6019-B 1966
C5OZ-6019-A 1965-1967 at change level 8
C5OZ-6019-B 1968

There's more gory details in there such as the C4AZ-6019-B 1966 not being used for the 289 HiPo

I wonder if the 7 or 8 or whatever that number may be is just a number for the casting mold or machine that made it? That would help the supplier Sheffield identify a mold or machine making rejected articles. Somewhat like the numbers on coils.

The date on your casting is suggesting a 2 month lead on your car build date.
Good data point -- we need more samples to see what the median is for 67.

Note that the service part number C5OZ-6019-A has the casting (engineering?) part number C5OE-6059-A in the part name and description column

The other three do not identify any corresponding numbers

On Bob Mannel's book on page 7-22 paragraph 7G1 there is a discussion about changes during the 1967 year.  I won't plagiarize it.  Quite a bit of good information and pictures.  I did not have time to look at the other years, but would hazard to guess that there are a lot of answers in here for your questions.

I didn't look at Mannel's book before I posted the pictures, but my pics do look a lot like what's in his book. I just posted what I thought were the important details.

I have to update the C4 post since I forgot to include a picture of the plug for the oil fill. An important feature.

Thanks for including the portions of the MPC.

Last week I removed / replaced the timing cover on my signature car to correct a coolant leak caused by corrosion at the gasket mating surfaces. The removed 7-rib C5OE-6059-A1 timing cover is original to the car; a 289 C-code Windsor Level 15 engine assembled in November 1966.

From what can be seen on the timing cover’s 66 date wheel, there are 4-6 dots (hard to tell), which would place the timing cover in mid-1966 production and installed on a November 1966 Windsor 289.

If a CMF member knows a service shop that can repair/restore the gasket mating surfaces so the aluminum cover can be eventually reinstalled, I’m interested. (For now, the car is running a new aftermarket replacement timing cover).

I have had some luck bead blasting the crowded area then filling with JB Weld. After it cured I filed it flat. It works if not too much is missing.

C8AE cover, looks like an early 67 date code on it (you decide, picture attached). It has a bolt on timing pointer. Found on a July-67 engine final assembly date. This is one of the late 289's with the C8 302 block.

Significant detail being the introduction of the bolt-on pointer.

As I first considered bringing the '66 timing cover back to serviceable condition, was thinking more along the lines of building up the aluminum by welding bead, then resurfacing. 

Have had good luck with JB Weld including repairing a crack in a rare plastic fan shroud, and other minor metal patching or adhering.  With heat and pressure on a mated surface; well, I have not tried JB for that.

I thought I'd add a close up of the date stamp on the late 66 no-rib cover.
Although I can't be sure about the dot count this cover certainly qualifies for one of the earliest MY 67 covers with no ribs.
I won't shrink the pics in order to leave the most detail. Although the year date looks a bit like a 65, rest assured this is a no-rib cover so it must be a 66 number.
