Specific question about Ford tooling hood differences...
« on: May 10, 2011, 06:53:40 PM »
Other than the unfinished flanges, is the support structure of the 64.5 Ford tooling hood the same as the support structure in the 65?  I've heard guys complaining about the structure being wrong for 64.5, so I can only assume that the company used the same support frame and just didn't fold over the last flange.  Right or wrong?
Other than the crush impressions being '66 style, is the Ford tooling hood correct for 65?

I was of the understanding that the under-structure of the hoods is the '66 style.  This is because the Ford tooling is the last version used for service parts.

Are the 65 and 66 the same except for the different depressions in the underside of the nose?

That's the main difference, but I seem to recall there were other subtle differences also.

My latest project involves finding a correct hood for a '65.

Can someone confirm for me that the new Ford tooling hoods are NOT correct for a '65.  From what I hear they are the '66 version with the extra indentations on the underside.

Check out the photos on this website. Scroll down to item #9 for the underside of the hood differences and you will clearly notice the difference in the "crumple" zone indentations. You will notice that the "65 Replacement Hood" has the indentations much longer than earlier versions which were not full length in the lip of the hood.

Thanks for the link and just to confirm I stopped in at NPD yesterday to look at one of the new Ford tooling hoods. It definitely has the '66 style indentations.

Like to chime in here and thank you all for this post and the link as well. I may have never known about this detail if I had not read through this. Over the weekend, we were in a show and the 66 coupe next to us had the 66 style, longer indentations. Our car is a 1-6-66 build, has a date stamp of 10 29 and has the 65, short style indentations. Kind of embarrassing I never noticed this over the years. Nice detail to know and look for.

Most folks don't know there were at least 4 different variations in hoods from the beginning of 64.5 production through the end of 66 production.

Hate it for all the folks that spent extra for the 'Ford tooling' 64.5 hood, especially if they ever have their car judged with authenticity rules.
