66 Fog light restoration - foam used internally
« on: April 30, 2025, 10:56:30 AM »
I?m starting to restore a pair of original 66 GT fog lights. When taking these apart, I noticed that they used some sort of foam cushion on each side. Is this original?  I?m sure it was to help stop with vibrations, etc. What would be a good replacement to use in this area if it is indeed original?
Thanks so much.

Yes I've found those same pieces on all of the early GT lights I've taken apart. For things like this I normally can find small sections of foam used in packaging that we receive that I find over time. Have found many types of foam and shapes that have come in handy for projects over the years. These appear to be fairly firm and possibly closed cell. Finding material in the same color or finish can be a little more difficult if your going that far.

I wonder if any of the foam gaskets in the heater box kits are similar foam, where you can cut what you need for GT Lights from the the gaskets?

Thanks both of you for a reply.

I was thinking the same about the heater box foam. It could work, but I will say this foam feels more dense, unless age has stiffened it up. Either way, glad to know if was original and not PO added. :-)

Thank you!

I had a spare part of heater foam insulation from a kit, turns out the foam is very close to this original.
