going back in time
« on: March 16, 2013, 09:47:42 PM »
if you could go back in time on the day your car was actually built which proceedure would you like to see performed? for myself it would be the rear interior panels on my 2+2.......or maybe how they filled the fluids w/o making a mess or having a leak.

I just installed a head liner in my dads 68 California Special, it took me several hours. I would like to see them do it in minuets.

I would love to see a conv. top being installed in a factory setting.  That is an impossible job in the best of circumstances, how could they possible do it in a short time with factory workers.  I do not remember that tops in that era were poorly fitting either.  In fact they all fit and worked well and the windows fit as well.  Another mystery.

SHould have gotten the San Jose headliner guys name and contact number that visited the shop last year. Could have invited him back and bought him lunch or something in exchange for videoing him installing a headliner in th eshop.

Another opportunity missed :(

My wish (of course) would be able to walk/follow a unibody down the sealant and paint sections at every plant - every classic year with a camera ;)

Got to wish big

I'm with Dom, but seeing all the detail on the engine would have been nice, would answer a lot of questions about alternators, oil filters, etc.. Maybe watch the final inspection of the car to get all those details.
Dave

PS maybe watch them put that glove box liner in

I'd like to walk through and watch the whole assy of my Mach1 from start to finish.

Dr. John Craft, a Mustang Monthly contributing Editor back in the 80's, His wife and himself got the pleasure of watching their fox body Mustang assembled from start to finish. In the article in the June '88 issue of MM, John explains how he was able to do what he had always dreamed about, take a step by step tour and watch his '88 fox body 5.0 be assembled.

He explained that it took 29 3/4 hours to build his scarlet red '88 LX HO from start to finish. He called it," The Longest Day". Very fitting.

That would be awesome to be able to do what John had done.

There's so many things, if I had a chance, would just like to walk the entire line and observe.

Murf, I believe the convertible tops were already tacked onto the frame and just bolted to the car on the assembly line.

I'd like to oversee the designer or the beancounter that didn't apply epoxy primer to the cowl area and kick his butt a few times....

a one man job with so many items bolted on, in less than a minute!

Just shove the fender in place.  ;D    1:53

I don't even think he was paying full attention either...

Thanks for sharing!
