« on: November 30, 2013, 09:21:37 PM »
Looking for a set of distributor cap clamps for a 64.5 289. , I have  several old 65 / 66 distributor’s and the clamps on those are shorter.  Distributor number is  C40F-12127-B.

I've never seen this before either and I've tuned thousands of Ford Engines from the '60' and '70's. How much longer are the clips? Take a look at the arc of the clips. Just like Leaf Springs, your old clips may have straightened out over time whereas the others may have retained more of their arc.

Can you post any photo's?

Huimm - thanks. Wonder if 6 cylinder ones are the longer of the two versions or maybe there is a third. Will see if I have one sitting around that I haven't tossed  :-\

You did say you have a '64-1/2 289...could your distributor, (just a guess mind you), be from a 260? I looked at some old photos of my '65 289 and the clip mounts are higher than those shown in your pictures.

Appears that he's got one of the side/manually oiled dist he's using. But Guess we'll wait - maybe he can provide the engineering number from the side so we can confirm the application ;)

Jeff, I couldn't find the oiler in his shots, where is it?

I see, it was just out of view in the first posted photo...looks like Jeff knew from the distributors design/appearance. My 6-Cylinder has the oiler but my '65 289 did not.

Thanks

The 64 1/2 distributor cap clamps are a unique length (longer) than the clamps for 65 distributors. I soaked mine in some strong cleaner last year and they dissolved.  They are not reproduced and 65/66 style are too short. I got some originals at the All Classic Mustang site that sells hard to find parts. Let me know if you need any additional help.

From your picture it looks like a 6 cyl distributer,
I can see the flange where it sits against the block
is higher like a 6 cyl distributor.
I looked in my Ford parts book and see that C4OF- B
is listed for a V8 but C4OF-E is for a 6 cyl, yours is
clearly marked B but may be a mis stamp.
All your V8 distributors should be the same length,
can you post a complete picture of the distributor?

Pre '65 8 cylinder distributors are totally different from '65 / up. The clamps are longer ( as mentioned) and use an external oiler. Different internals as well. You can interchange complete distributor from early to later engines, just parts/pieces are different. I restore both types. ( cheap plug )
