Original 1965 mustang starter solenoid
« on: December 24, 2013, 01:39:58 AM »
Hi,

Looking to find an original starter solenoid for my July 1965 sj built car.
It's suppose to be a rectangular fomoco w/ 2701966 on the top? Brown or black body?  Is there a way to tell a repro from an original?

Thx

Here is an original (black body BTW), and I have a picture of this side by side with a new repro somewhere and they are certainly different.  I would love to find one of these NOS as well - good luck with your search!

Black body for your car.

Haven't looked at repos to compare - normally just get an original. Believe some had figured out (purchased a rivet tool) how to remove and replace the large center rivet, so that the mount could be removed and replated. Normally all the is visually poor on originals

Here are the repro solenoid and an original side by side.  The repro also has the felt pad on the bottom, which it should not.

Thanks for the pic!  Were is the felt pad, at the bottom of the unit?  Were the finishes on the originals grainy, there are brown raised specs in the one I have, not to smooth, I will post some pics.

Thx!

As far as texture of the surface on some of the brown and early black ones the individual fibers can be felt with a finger on others they are very smooth. Miht be a different vendor, batch of material or other production difference

Here is a shot of an early brown style bottom and a 66 - up with the vent and felt filter

Great pics!  I don't have felt at the bottom of mine here are a few pics...Not sure if this is a  early or late one, it has brown flakes (bumpy, looks like rust) around it but was originally black

Whats the best way to clean it up? Does anyone restore these?

When was the ellips Ford logo changed to the rectangular logo?

Current understanding is the change from the oval to the block FoMoCo design was during 65 production

There are a bunch of early styles they used including the ones marked

2701966
C4AF11450A (with Autolite & REPCO)
C6AF-11450-A (with Autolite & RBM)  - have one with the "texture" 65fastbk was showing

Then the later C7AF-11450-A1 (with Autolite & RBM)

One provider produced these early upright styes with a plastic bottom using a couple of different engineering numbers

Started putting an article for the site together a couple of years back - got stalled with some other efforts :(
