Topic: What radial size on 14x7 Steel Wheels

What radial tire best matches the F-70 WSW Polyglas tire that came on the 1970 14x7 steel wheels?? I see some are saying 205/75/r14 and 215/70/r14

   I have 205's on the front and 235's on the rear, works quite well.

I have 215 70 r14s on the 69 conv and they look right to me

I'm going to disagree with everyone and say 225-70-R14. Just do the math - the best info I could find identified the diameter of an F70x14 tire as 26.2". The modern equivalent that comes closest to that size (26.402" diameter) is 225-70-R14.

The formula is diameter = ((2 * tire-width * aspect ratio) / 25.4 ) + wheel rim size. Plugging in 225-70-14 you get ((2 * 225 * .7) / 25.4 ) + 14 = 26.402. Other diameters for comparison:

205-70-R14: 25.299"
215-70-R14: 25.85"

Scott is basically very correct, I had done the same calculations when radials first became vogue. I used the setup I have because my car has no power steering, making a slightly narrower tire more appealing while diameter of the front tires is inconsequential. I wanted a bit more traction on the back so for daily driving and an occasional smack of the firewall I went with the 235's on the back with a speedo drive gear change. The car steers easier, and has a good bit more traction for daily driving and an occasional pounding of the gas pedal.

The OP referenced 14x7 wheels for his 1970.  I believe the 1969 originals were 14x6. Will the 215-70-R14 work on a 14x6 wheel?  I ask because I'll be looking for tires for my '69 pretty soon.

Scott:  Mikes car was a typical Mach l and came with 14/6 rims covered with F70-14 no size white letter Goodyear Polyglas tires.

Understood, I still don't know which of these tires will fit on a 14x6 wheel. I'm using 225-70-R14 radials on my 14x7 styled steel wheels and they fit just fine. Your local tire shop should be able to tell you if any of these will fit a narrower wheel.

Scott: I thought all wheels other than the boss 9's & magnums with the F60-15 tires used six inch rims. Styled steels measure six inches on the beads but seven to the outside. A seven inch would have been a bit wide for an F70-14, but good for a 60 series. Maybe I've got my numbers screwed up, have to correct if so.

The standard 1970 Mach 1 wheel was 14x7, as were the optional styled steel wheels. Other 1970 Mustangs used 14x5, 14x6, or 15x7 wheels depending on the specific application.

I have the 68-69 GT wheels on my car and the 215s seem to fit very nice

I have Firestone supreme P215/70R-14s, needs bigger tires for sure, the car is way too powerful for these puny rims/tires. Sorry, the cars look better with more substantial rubber, even my 65 with a 5.0 destroy puny 14s. Safety is more important than anything.
